Victorian Coastal Holidays was helpful. Special holiday homes can be found on Phillip Island, Bass Coast and Mornington Peninsular. From spectacular water views, proximity to beautiful beaches, fishing spots, it is all available. From the Island homes, enjoy some of Victoria’s best surf and swimming beaches, and one of the State’s most popular fishing locations. It's Australia’s home of motorcycle racing and is also one of the nation’s most popular family areas, with activities for children AND adults eg famous Phillip Island Penguin Parade, The Nobbies, Seal Rocks, Koala Sanctuary Treetop Walk and other famous wildlife attractions. From the Mornington Peninsular homes, there is easy access to the local beautiful beaches, Peninsular Hot Springs, Mornington wineries and other pleasures.
So finding our cheap, small holiday home was easy, our only requirements being a] 2 proper bedrooms & a kitchen-family room, and b] the back of the house facing the ocean.
Since then, I have found and read books about C21st beach houses, written by Stephen Crafti during the last 25 years. He wrote and featured stunning full colour photography. Australians and New Zealanders are drawn to the coast. Whether it's a fancy abode or a simple fibro shack, the sound of the surf and the feel of sand beneath one's feet are very appealing. The beach house book featured 50 architect-designed homes on the coast. From the simple to the monumental, the closeness to the beach was very appealing.

In Beach Houses: Australia And New Zealand
While many of the homes were lavish, others simply framed the great views. In this book the author explored the evolution of the once humble abode, from the fibro shack to architecturally engineered homes that now dot the coastline. See 50 beautiful architect-designed homes.
The Beach House book by Crafti featured 50 architect-designed homes along the coast, leaving a lasting impression. While many of the homes featured were lavishly appointed, others simply framed the great views. Filled with photos of well-designed beach houses around the world, Crafti might fill a dream of having one’s own seaside home.
While many of the homes featured in the book are lavish, others simply frame the spectacular views ahead. From the best-selling 21st Century Series, 200+ vibrant full colour pages capture the seaside splendour of over 50 architect-designed homes.
Volume I of Beach Houses showed a diverse collection of Australian and N.Z coastal retreats. The beach house had long played a major role for Australians and New Zealanders’ summer activities, but design was often of secondary importance. Only more recently has the beach house evolved into an architect-designed sanctuary for a family, with breathtaking surrounds and comfortable living.

In Volume 4 of Beach Houses, Crafti again selected some superb beach homes in a variety of locations. There has never been as much demand among hard working people for places to get away from it all. Once the beach-side site has been selected, architects are the next port of call in the quest for a coastal dream home. Crafti walked the reader through a fine collection of architect-designed beach homes; permanent homes, weekenders, luxury sites and some like the traditional beach shack.
The 5th book of the series was dedicated to beach houses and showcases almost every kind of modern style. This is a great coffee table book with appeal to lovers of architecture and the beach, from an Australian architecture and design writer. Filled with stunning shots of well-designed beach houses around the world, Stephen Crafti's latest tome helped readers dream of having their own seaside dwelling.
A Pocketful of Beach Houses offered 50+ examples of residential beach architecture, including great projects from top Australian and N.Z architects. Superb architect-designed homes, which in many cases have been adapted to harsh beachside environments, were explained and illustrated with beautiful photos, plans and descriptive text. Note stunning ocean views, dune views and impeccable architectural design for beach living.
Another fine collection of beach architecture is Beach Houses Down Under - stunning ocean views, dunes, seaside flora, and salty air are almost palpable! Crafti again selected some superb architect designed homes, both normal homes and holiday houses, in a wide variety of beach locations.
Many architects were seen: Glenn Murcutt, Harry Seidler, Pete Bossley, Architectus, Craig Moller, McBride Charles Ryan, Kerstin Thompson, Brit Anderson, McGauran Soon, Lindsay Clare, Cox Richardson and others. All projects reflected fine contemporary architecture in a diversity of beach locations: from environmentally sensitive designs, to sumptuous seaside homes and luxurious clifftop residences.

Hello Hels, You were lucky to find a nice water-front cottage with a beautiful view. It's funny, but thinking about many of the water-side communities I have know, the houses or cottages often did not face or feature the beachfront. Rather, they formed the streets of small summer communities, the citizens of which could go to the beach if they wanted, but there were other community activities, and often there was a religious aspect, as in many of the Chautauqua-type communities scattered about.
My brother and I often went fishing a long time ago, and while the wretched cabins we rented were often in beautiful settings, I don't recall any of them taking advantage of a water view, or having any built-in nice qualities or amenities. Just the bare minimum to rent at the lowest price, bet even then the water views should have been free! In fact, we often went to the original Lake Chautauqua, which is a reasonable driving distance from Cleveland.

p.s. My own preference is for views where you can see across the water, as opposed to ocean views, or large lakes like Lake Erie, which have the same unlimited vistas.
Beach houses just scream to be modern and also part of the environment. I really like the view of that first photo you shared. I love how it looks like dunes. Have a super weekend!
Your story beautifully captures how a simple dream of a modest coastal retreat can open into a lifelong fascination with the evolving art and architecture of beach houses
We could have bought a nice holiday beach house, but I argued that me being a shift worker, made it impractical. although there would have been no shortage of family to holiday there.
I am sure the pole house on the Great Ocean Road was featured in the book.
Pretty fancy. I find the first one interesting.
Great view there of that Pole House, we've passed it many times when over that way. Once we had just shacks, now beautiful beach homes.

A family would want to enjoy the: swimming or surfing, fresh air, sunshine, ks of clean sand and above all the endless views of the ocean or bay. You cannot guarantee, for example, that the sunshine might disappear and the rain might starts, but the ocean views will never disappear.
Sporting events and church events are handy, but the family could do that at home. Packing up a house load and travelling to the beach is only worthwhile if the experience is very very special.

It depends on your financial situation. Some beach houses are inter-war cottages that need some modern facilities and perhaps a coat of paint. Even on a nice beach, those old cottages are relatively cheap.
But the modern, architect-designed masterpieces are beautiful, and cost a fortune.

countries that don't have most of their population near a coastline won't know what you mean. They might build ski chalets or railway journeys, but they won't have a lifelong fascination with the location and architecture of beach houses.
In the 1950s, my parents did not have enough money to buy a second house (or any sort) so they rented a caravan each summer holiday and moved to a beach-side caravan park. It was a great decade!
Andrew
My mum and her sister brought all the kids each holiday, but dad and my uncle were working. Therefore the women lived within 2 hours of the city so that the men could travel to town every Monday morning early and returned to the beach at lunch on Fridays.
Did the men enjoy their holidays? I don't know but the 6 children loved it :) Could a shift worker arrange coming and going?
Andrew
Thank you. I added the Pole House in Great Ocean Rd at your suggestion.
It was designed by Frank Dixon who was the first owner, moving in during 1978. The house may be small and minimalist, but the view from 40 ms above the beach is sensational.

You are right! The Basin Beach House, which is perched above the sand dunes, of an architecture award from the NSW Australian Institute of Architects in 2020. Architect Peter Stutchbury was said to occupy the ocean edge carefully.

The Great Ocean Rd is one of the loveliest coastal routes in all of Australia, even though it is only 250 ks long. The views are sensational, as you saw yourself, and the beach homes have appropriately become more and more beautiful, over the last c50 years.
The Australian homes are simply beautiful.
Having a seaside home, whether second or only home, is a dream beyond most people's pockets in UK. Beach huts , without sanitation, sell for ridiculous sums.
jabblog
here too.. ridiculous sums :( Which is why most families can only afford to rent cottages, Airbnbs and other small options for the summer holidays. And even then, it is very expensive. But it might be the most wonderful summer holiday you will ever spend.
Bom sábado e bom final de semana, com muita paz e saúde. Fico feliz em saber, que você encontrou a casa que você deseja. Todas as casas mostradas são muito lindas, diferente das casas projetadas por arquitetos brasileiros ou de outros países.

That raises another issue. Life has was reduced in the 3 years of Covid lockdown for the whole nation, and for me personally, retirement reduced my income as well. Thus it is likely that travel outside the country will be very rare. Most holidays will be across Australia (and New Zealand).
I have always wanted a beach house, my whole life, but never one of those fancy architect designed dream homes. I'm more of a shack/cabin person as long as it has a decent kitchen, good plumbing and these days, an internet connection. Circumstances have never been in my favour though and I have packed away that particular dream. I'll settle for a home closer to the twins so I can help out more.
I would have loved a beach house when our family lived at home but we couldn't afford one then. Now I'm happy living close to a hospital ha ha. MY son in law's family have a beach house at RYe on the Mornington peninsular but it isn't an architect dream home. However, it has recently been renovated and is used as an air BnB when they are not using it. It isn't on the beach but very close. We have had some lovely Christmas holidays there.
River
me too. I would have loved to have our primary home on the beach, but that was never possible because we had to live near our parents and community in the centre of Melbourne. The rented caravans and rented beach cottages were a perfect compromise for years.
The small cottage we finally bought was a bit ordinary but the location was perfect. Our sons loved it and as they got into their teens, they invited a school friend each summer holiday to share their bedroom. Now our grandchildren have repainted the house for their own use :)
diane
Rye is delightful, even if the house is not a dream home. School summer holidays are the very best time of the year to swim and walk along the beach!
When the SIL's family is not using the home, putting it on an airbnb list is an excellent idea. As long as the insurance up to date.
I would love to stay in one of those beach houses they look so cool
Jo-Anne
I suspect most people in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Mexico, Greece and other beachy nations would say the same thing :)

I want to have a house of my own with my partner and thinking about a mortgage and how to go about it. I'm a very modest person so something small would do me. I don't think I could afford a beach home with the way prices are :(
keys-shop
thank you for reading the post. Do you do any work on beach houses?
Liam
Paying off a mortgage is a problem for so many families now, so if that is out of the question for a while, rent a small place during the summer holidays and cook your own food there. And perhaps share the rent with some friends. Sunny holidays are essential for hard working people.
Decades ago now, we holidayed in a rented house on the cliffs at Mollymook.
I've never forgotten that house and wish I could holiday there again.
kylie
every adult, if they are lucky, has wonderful memories of special family events in childhood. The holiday home, the beach, dad spending time running and surfing with the children, the weather, icecreams etc. I don't know Mollymook at all, but I know you are quite right about the memories :)
