Richard Wagner, Ravello Music Festival Italy and Parsifal.

I wanted to investigate the Ravello Music Festival, for when Covid ended and travel became a serious possibility. One of the most renowned music festivals in Italy, this event takes place from July-Sept each year in Ravello on the Amalfi Coast, one hour’s drive from Naples.

Villa Rufolo and tower

Kiss from Italy was wonderful. The phrase Il magico giardino di Klingsor è trovato, now immortalised on a stone plaque on the Villa Rufolo wall in Ravello, was what German composer Richard Wagner (1813-83) stated in 1880 after visiting its luscious gardens overlooking the sea. Meaning the magical garden of Klingsor has been found, the phrase was scripted by the composer in Albergo Palumbo’s guestbook, referring to his visit to Villa Rufolo. It was an important statement: Wagner’s excitement after visiting the Villa’s gardens led to the composition of a portion of his final opera, Parsifal.

Years later, his gratitude towards the town of Ravello inspired a return of appreciation with the creation of a summer music festival in his honour. The internationally acclaimed Ravello Music Festival aka Wagner Festival has hosted a fine array of talent eg London Symphony Orchestra and St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra; conductors eg Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta; and famous jazz players. The festival runs from June to mid-Sept every year.

Wagner’s wife Cosima maintained a diary that documented their visit to the Amalfi Coast. In it she described the long ascent to Ravello by mule where they were enchanted by the recent renovation of Villa Rufolo as handled by Sir Francis Neville Reed; he had hired Michele Ruggiero, head of excavations at Pompeii, to restore the C13th Villa to its original splendour.

Wagner actually began composing the opera Parsifal in 1857, almost 20 years before be visited Ravello. During those 20 years of artistic quiet, he composed the opera Tristan and Isolde and all 4 instalments of the Ring Cycle, but remained stuck on how to craft the second and most important act of his opera, Parsifal. Once he saw the gardens at Villa Rufolo, everything changed. The second act was set in a magical garden inspired by that exact spot, and Parsifal debuted less than two years later at Bayreuth in Bavaria.

Villa Rufolo overlooks the famous Piazza del Vescovado, and is located just off of Viale Richard Wagner through a dramatic arched entrance way. Enter Villa Rufolo and slowly explore the tower and museum, though the greatest attraction is the garden. Overlook the cool blue of the sea and hear the sounds of an orchestra preparing for the evening’s Ravello Music Festival concert.

Wagner might have wondered why celebrities, artists and tourists continue to make the pilgrimage there still. The town is nestled high above the Amalfi coast in the southern Salerno Province. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has famously served as a haven for artists, musicians and intellectuals eg DH Lawrence, Salvador Dalí, Greta Garbo and Humphrey Bogart

Although it is close to the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is not located right on the water so reach this beautiful scenic town by heading inland c3 ks. Ravello is perched on a great spur of rock, c350 meters above the Mediterranean Sea. Constructed on the site of a settlement believed to have been built by a Roman colony fleeing from the barbarian invasions, Ravello was chosen by a group of noble families from Amalfi who, in the C9th, rebelled against the authority of the Doge.

The tower originally served as a watchtower for Villa Rufolo, the very important architectural masterpiece that contributed so much to Ravello's international fame. After all, it was Villa Rufolo that so inspired Wagner’s Parsifal. The villa was built in the late C13th by the powerful Rufolo family. The Norman-looking building has towers, cloisters and rows of arches, the grounds of the villa are gorgeous and the cliff-edge terrace has the best sea views anywhere!

The Ravello Music Festival is a yearly series of concerts at the stunning Italian town of Ravello. The small town stands at the top of the world Perched high on the cliffs above the Amalfi Coast, the view to the Mediterranean Sea below is to die for. Plan your Ravello Music Trip early especially for the summer months with the Ravello Music Festival and the Sunrise Concert in August.

I just watched the concert on youtube. It is such a fabulous orchestra playing with that beautiful sunset. What a great way to learn more history from your blog

Parsifal and the Holy Grail was a rather harsh story dealing with castles, magicians, spears, maids and knights. The Amalfi Coast is sunny, warm and endless fun. A strange place for Wagner to love.

that is great, thank you. The Concert Schedule for 2023 will be wonderful, but I will NOT be going to the Sunrise Concert, regardless of how stunning the dawn might be :)

And the photos look sensational.

it seems a bit incongruous, doesn't it? Especially as you didn't mention castration!

I imagine that the renovation of Villa Rufolo made the gardens so splendid, and the views over the coastline so spectacular, that Wagner saw the connection straight away. The missing part of Parsifal was immediately set in a magical garden.

Hi Hels - it's an area of Italy I've never visited ... one day, perhaps. Still you've given us a very good overview here and how Wagner was entranced by the area. Thanks - cheers Hilary

It seems Ravello is a place worth visiting regardless of the music festival.
Richarder Wagner is not played in Israel (not an official ban, though). He was quite a jew hater. (I don't wish to mention here words he used to describe jews).

me either. I love Italy but have never been further south than Rome. That will be fixed!

"nod". I face the same moral dilemma every time a very talented writer, composer, artist, historian etc is anti Semitic, racist or violent. I don't want to be vulgar in my blog, so normally I will avoid writing about immoral people.

Is the Ravella Music Festival still the same as the Wagner Festival?

In 1953, Richard Wagner’s strong connection with Villa Rufolo was advertised to promote tourism to Southern Italy. And since then, the San Carlo Orchestra has performed Wagner’s music in Ravello. Now the Festival lasts for much longer each summer and although Wagner’s music is still included in each year’s programme, the Ravello Music Festival covers more composers and other types of music.

The beauty of the seascape sounds like it’s well worth a visit, but I don’t think I’d go to a festival that honoured Wagner - I’m not a fan. Even without the antisemitism I find his music too loud and vulgar for my taste. Interesting about the Parsifal thing, though - that was a VERY long bout of writer’s block! 😂

the synopsis of Parsifal (from Metropolitan Opera) goes as follows: At his bewitched fortress, the necromancer Klingsor summons Kundry who, under his spell, is forced to lead a double existence; he orders her to seduce the young fool. Having secured the Spear, Klingsor now seeks to destroy the youth, whom he knows can save the knights of the Grail. Even if Wagner was a moral human being whose music was neither loud nor vulgar, this is a very silly story.

Fortunately the Festival experience is amazing.

Ravello is a lovely place, we stayed there a few years ago. In addition to Villa Ruffalo it also has Villa Cimbrone. Both are delightful places to visit.

Thank you! Villa Cimbrone looks blissful - historical parts of the architecture, the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen and spectacular views.

I am assuming the costs are not cheap.
