In the meantime, I have already changed the details of teetotaller story.

Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-39665630136921654852021-02-10T14:35:38.403+11:002021-02-10T14:35:38.403+11:00You said "Ben also travelled overseas". ...You said "Ben also travelled overseas". I guess you are referring to William Benjamin Chaffey. I am not aware of him ever being known as Ben and believe he was known as William or more casually as WB. (George had a son named Benjamin and he was known as Ben. But he was far too young to have travelled overseas on a fund raising mission in 1884)

I do not believe George & William Benjamin (Generally known as WB) were teetotallers. In fact William was the first Vice-President of the licensed Mildura Club in 1894. (In the same year The Working Man's Club also opened.) But my understanding is the Chaffey brothers believed alcohol could be very damaging to society hence their efforts to prevent hotels being licensed in both Mildura & Renmark.

Rio Vista was not the Chaffey's family home but was built by WB Chaffey as his personal family home i.e. it was not George's house. Would this have made a difference to George and Ben Chaffey, had the Trust been established in the early 1880s? If not, what might have made this brave venture into a complete success?Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-20503169866528209972010-03-14T21:02:32.391+11:002010-03-14T21:02:32.391+11:00"They also had a publication, The Australian ..."They also had a publication, The Australian Irrigation Colonies, known as The Red Book, which was to be subject of criticism for its many errors."

Not least of which was that it was actually blue...or was that Monty Python's Big Red Book?Brian Hugheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00350965110160879688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-1115435168522410872010-03-13T11:56:57.585+11:002010-03-13T11:56:57.585+11:00Another most interesting post.

It was named after our Chaffey brothers because they first brought the benefits of irrigation on a large scale to the Riverland area in South Australia.Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-74525865730365911072010-03-11T00:20:51.786+11:002010-03-11T00:20:51.786+11:00I do enjoy your posts, I learn such a lot.I do enjoy your posts, I learn such a lot.Hermeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00968366076064269729noreply@blogger.com
