It took until 1994 before the City of Osnabrück extended the Cultural History Museum to include the new Felix Nussbaum Haus. Had the city forgotten one of its most famous sons?Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-36362270357221509592015-02-16T20:08:52.836+11:002015-02-16T20:08:52.836+11:00Thank you so much for your blog . The young artist suffered from intermittent “fears of disease” and “fears of dying”, probably attributable to unconscious neurotic stresses deriving from childhood.

Nussbaum’s school days coincided with the stresses of the First World War. His school record showed that he had great difficulties with his studies and was self conscious about his diminutive stature. His inner insecurity was reflected in the dark mood and morbid scenes portrayed in a whole series of paintings around 1930.

Pictorial Narrative in the Nazi Period: Felix Nussbaum, Charlotte Salomon and Arnold Daghani, by Deborah Schultz and Edward Timms, Routledge, 2009.

Pictorial Narrative in the Nazi Periodhttps://books.google.com.au/books?id=MXbfAQAAQBAJ&pg=PA12&lpg=PA12&dq=Felix+Nussbaum+neurotic&source=bl&ots=q45wLfNjvp&sig=qb16vdoEYKs9BUMZdyg0xla1jDk&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Pc7fVJTUDsS7mwWU94LgDw&ved=0CDIQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=Felix%20Nussbaum%20neurotic&f=falsenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-91011116230266135022015-02-15T03:45:14.777+11:002015-02-15T03:45:14.777+11:00Jane and Lance,

His art accurately captured the very essence of the individual in relation to his hostile environment. It wasn't depression he was describing in those elongated El Greco-like figures; it was bodily and spiritual pain.Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-53585978689204556372015-02-14T22:42:02.408+11:002015-02-14T22:42:02.408+11:00Hello Helen,

So sad that he was talented enough to win the scholarship to study in Italy but then could not develop his own style under the political regime of the day. This was the case for so many talented artists all over Europe during the war years.

Nussbaum does manage to capture the very essence of the individual in relation to the hostile environment in which they find themselves. The figures positively reach out from the canvas and draw the viewer into their world of fear and torture.Jane and Lance Hattatthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16831890261259302647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-91720970781640152642015-02-14T19:19:06.072+11:002015-02-14T19:19:06.072+11:00Deb,
