I had no idea that the two Dukes, who were after all cousins, became so close that they hoped to strike an Anglo-German alliance. It shouldn't surprise us that Charles Edward Duke of Coburg still loved both his countries equally. But the Duke of Windsor was taking a major risk... and not the first, clearly.Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-84956150027583628162020-07-23T21:53:20.493+10:002020-07-23T21:53:20.493+10:00Research Dr Urbach has documented in her new book ...Research Dr Urbach has documented in her new book Go-Betweens for Hitler shows how Nazi supporter Charles Edward Duke of Coburg was a key figure in the network of private individuals who Adolf Hilter used for covert negotiations when he mistrusted his foreign ministry. As Coburg's sister Alice Countess of Athlone was the Queen Mary’s sister-in-law, he was “welcomed by the royals, including the Duke of Windsor” to the extend he was invited to visit George V and the Queen in 1932.

The two Dukes became so close that they hoped to strike an Anglo-German alliance. The Soviet intelligence services were certain that the Duke of Windsor was a Nazi sympathiser when war broke out, and reported in 1940 that he and Hitler had discussed forming a new English government, and striking an alliance with Germany. The revelations come after a 2015 book revealed that Hitler wanted to use Windsor when he was still King as a puppet on the British throne.

Kashmira Gander
IndependentKashmira Ganderhttps://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/nazi-sympathiser-and-former-king-the-duke-of-windsor-wanted-england-to-be-bombed-international-10306121.htmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-72245466311354465212014-07-28T03:27:10.892+10:002014-07-28T03:27:10.892+10:00Anon

Arthur was the son who decided to renounce his own and his son's succession rights to the German dukedom.

Queen Victoria must have truly loved Arthur because he was allowed to get on with his own fulfilling life in Canada, India etc.Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-88771961931848185872014-07-27T19:49:39.214+10:002014-07-27T19:49:39.214+10:00Queen Victoria's Children tonight was about he...Queen Victoria's Children tonight was about her four sons. At least until WW1 when everything changed.

But the closeness of the aristocracy to Nazi Germany before and during WW2 was a totally different story. Sir Oswald Mosley was a member of the aristocracy, as were his two wives. Your article points out some of the extra elements of dilemma that affected Charles Albert, but in the end he still supported a regime that was committing unimaginable crimes, and so I cannot feel too much pity for him.

I wonder if in the last part of his life he made any statements to distance himself from Nazi Germany.
--JimParnassushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08958901307538141468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-47756519582645406992014-07-26T10:02:14.127+10:002014-07-26T10:02:14.127+10:00The tv series said Quen Victoria regarded her chil...The tv series said Quen Victoria regarded her children as ugly, nasty and frog-like and that she just wanted to spend time with her husband, Albert.
