So here is a useful goodreads review:

In 1942, at 22 Leo Marks left his father's famous bookshop, 84 Charing Cross Road and went to war. Soon recognised as a genius cryptographer, he became head of communications at the Special Operations Executive where he revolutionised Allied code making techniques and trained some of the most famous agents dropped into occupied Europe. Marks thus had a unique perspective on, until now, a little-known aspects of WW2. Marks’ book is a thrilling and poignant memoir that celebrates individual courage, without losing sight of the human cost.

Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-995858423328341422021-09-08T18:37:15.158+10:002021-09-08T18:37:15.158+10:00Hello. My children and grandchildren think I am a technological midget.

I too wonder how I missed learning the backstory of so many people throughout school, uni and after. So I decided to go back to uni to study history and art history, then to lecture in adult education (TAFE in Australia) and later to use all my lecture notes for blog posts. I am constantly learning, from my own blog research and from reading 100 other peoples' blogs.

Never feel overwhelmed :)Helshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02849907428208235392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-83889816485319757942015-01-08T01:29:02.727+11:002015-01-08T01:29:02.727+11:00In a post on the Indian film The Lunchbox, I have ...In a post on the Indian film The Lunchbox, I have drawn a link to Helene Hanff's book 84 Charing Cross Rd. Many of them between people from different countries who bonded first on-line and only later met face to face.

How much more powerful it must have been for Ms Hanff, isolated in her one room, cut off from the books she craved. I somehow missed both the book and the movie before, but now I will put them on my list.

I think the story would have even more appeal today, when the second-hand book business has for the most part become so impersonal, and the act of buying books has become divorced from the intellectual appreciation of them.
--Road to Parnassus Parnassushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08958901307538141468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3067098918914268503.post-7011911065178466452013-02-12T19:28:27.970+11:002013-02-12T19:28:27.970+11:00Essendonian
